Welcome to the World Of Males

In my English class, we’ve started a book called The Good Earth about the whole life of a Chinese farmer set in the nineteen hundreds.  So far, I’ve only read up to Chapter 6, but the book seems interesting except for how much sexism there is in this book so far.  Granted, it was set back in the 1900’s in China where male children were worshiped.

The book starts out with Wang Lung, the main character of this book, preparing for his marriage to a slave at a rich house.  Wang Lung picks up his new bride to be, O-lan, and they start to walk home, but she has to walk a distance behind him.  When he tells her to prepare a meal for his friends coming over, she makes them a fantastic meal, but Wang Lung debases her cooking in front of his friends.  What’s the worst thing of all is how O-lan does all of the house work AND she helps him out in the fields.  She helps him out until the moment she gives birth and after a day’s rest, goes back to working in the fields alongside him.  Wang Lung even had the nerve to get mad at O-lan for not keeping up with Wang Lung’s pace when she’s hours from giving birth.

Parental Leave

Today, however, women get a certain period of time off of work to have their child called parental leave.  Women can work, stay home to take care of the house, or do both, but they are respected.  They are treated as equal as men are with all the same benefits and jobs.

Or are they?  It’s true that since the 1930’s when this was written till now that the equality of genders has improved drastically, but is there 100% equality in this world?  Of course there’s not.  Living in the U.S.A., inequality is not as big of a problem as other countries.

While I was surfing the internet, I came upon this interesting article about South Korea’s new female president.  Even in the United States, we’ve never had a female president before.  This is a big milestone for not just Korea, but the world, yet North Korea is creating problems for South Korea and the new president.  North Korea is saying that it’s the new president’s fault (Park Geun-Hye) for the tensions in the Korean Peninsula.  They put doubts into the citizens of South Korea about her leadership qualities because she’s a female.

South Korea’s new president is only one example of how much the world has changed and been more accepting, but has it really?  Are women still not being stereotyped and thought of as the inferior sex by ignorant men and women?  There are some people who are ignorant and will never accept females as being capable to do everything a guy can do, maybe even better.  It’s quite obvious nowadays that everyone should be treated equal, but reading The Good Earth has really shed light on how horrible it used to be.  Welcome to the World of Males Equality No Matter What
