K-Wednesdays: “Please Dont…” by K.will

Welcome to another K-Wednesday. Today we will be leaning more toward the K-Indie world rather than the standard mainstream K-pop. The song we will be discussing today isn’t popular enough to be considered mainstream K-pop while being too popular to be considered true K-Indie. So here it is. K.will’s “Please Don’t…”

Let’s start off by discussing the song. The song is about a person wishing that their significant other will not leave them. K.Will uses the setting of a car drive  to make his point. He shows how the deafening silence coupled with their own thoughts of losing their significant other torture that person. The person in their mind constantly is telling the person beside them “Please Don’t” leave as they slowly approach their final destination/end of relationship.

K.will , I wonder why he doesn’t show up in most of his MVs he’s so good looking.

Now onto the MV. The music video portrays a man (Seo In Guk)  who friends are getting married. Seeing his friends cuddle and be all lovey-dovey fills him up with jealousy. After a while he find out that the reason why he is jealous is because he is in love with one of his friends.

Throughout the MV it is easy to assume that the one he is in love with is the female character (Dasom) but we find out at the end that it is not her but the mans male friend (Ahn Jae Hyun) that he is in love with.

The truth unfold, well in this case comes together

The ending of this MV is one of the best twists in a Korean music video I’ve seen in a long time. The MV leads you to believe that the main character is in love with the girl and this is just another jealous love story, but BOOM it’s not, he turns out to be gay and in love with his best friend. One, you feel horrible as a person for assuming a persons sexual preferences but then you feel amazed at the advancement of the viewpoint of homosexuality in Korea. From my experience this is one of the few Korean MVs to portray a homosexual relationship ( another would be Ping by Clazziquai, I also recommend that) which would be unheard of in the mainstream K-Pop industry (if i’m wrong, message me the MV).

This MV is also filled with a ton of irony. Seo In Guk who plays the main character also plays the main character in a Korean drama called Reply 1997.

The cast of Reply 1997

In Reply 1997, Seo In Guk’s character is in love with his childhood friend. However throughout the drama Seo In Guk is pursuit for love is blocked by his rivals of love. One rival being his own brother while the other being his best friend. Seo In Guk’s character believes that his best friend is in love with the female lead, however this is not the case. his best friend is actually in love with him and the main character doesn’t realize this. Yes in K.wills MV Seo In Guk is gay for his best friend but his best friend doesn’t realize it, while in the drama Seo In Guk’s best friend is in love with Seo In Guk but Seo In Guk doesn’t realize it. SAD LIFE.

Seo In Guk and Hoya from Infinite, They are meant to be. Love has no bounds.

I highly recommend that you watch both this MV and the drama Reply 1997. Stay tuned for next weeks K-Wednesday
