K-Wednesday: “Sorry Sorry” by Super Junior

Hi and welcome to another week of US bringing YOU great Korean music. This week we’re going to talk shortly on a video from the group that got me into Kpop.

I’m Sorry Sorry I got this song stuck in your head for days.  (Get it?)  The song is so simple and catchy, anyone could sing along with it.  Why is this song unique out of any other Korean or English song?  This song, if you can believe, talks about how much in love this guy is with the girl.  He apologizes for falling in love with her which is why the song is called “Sorry Sorry”.  Without knowing Korean, everyone would assume the song is a bunch of repeating words with no meaning for the sake of being catchy.  The upbeat tempo and fast dancing doesn’t fit our persona of what a love song is suppose to be like.  When we think of love songs, we think more like ballads.

Ironically, Super Junior did make a ballad of this song after the song got really popular.  The video for the ballad is above.  This came after the upbeat version.  Even though they submitted to the idea of what a love song is suppose to be, “Answer” has 4.8 million views while “Sorry Sorry” has 43.3 million with the dance version of “Sorry Sorry” at 16.1 million views.  (The dance version ONLY was posted for the sake of our younger readers).  It’s clearly evident the original version of Sorry Sorry is more popular and well known.

That’s not the only thing great about this song.  If you’ve seen Korean pop music videos, the groups, regardless of being male or female, ALWAYS have a choreographed dance.  You may think some of their dance moves are downright strange.  Usually each song has a popular dance move that people start copying and dancing all over like Gangnam Style.  With Super Junior and Sorry Sorry, it’s the rubbing your hands together side to side.  Now that doesn’t sound like a dance move, but observe the video above.  The touching your shoes dance move is also popular too.  Almost any easy looking Korean dance move is going to be popular.

I hope you enjoyed Super Junior-Sorry Sorry and if not, we have many other wonderful songs to come.  Everyone’s tastes differ so tune in next week for another K-Wednesday.  (Hint: Next week we have some K-Indie).
