K-Wednesdays: “Don’t Go Home” by GD & TOP

Every Wednesday from now on we will be having an event called K-Wednesday where we will be reviewing different a K-Pop music video every week. So to start off we figured that we had to start with a Big Bang (yes pun intended) with Don’t Go Home by GD&TOP

The music video tells the story of how G Dragon attempts to capture the heart of a young girl with the aid of his extremely daper (my bias is already showing) wingman TOP. One of the great things about this music ideo is that there are so many allusions within the 3 minutes and 29 seconds of this MV. Right off the bat, the MV shows a logo similar to the Warner Bros. logo.

YG version

WB version

It could be said that this slight case of logo infringement could be an homage to Playboy’s request to YG Entertainment to change GD&TOP’s original logo.

The 2nd allusion in this MV is the famous poster “Hope” poster of Barrack Obama during his 2008 election campaign. For GD&TOP’s version TOP’s face replaces that of Obama.

I would vote for him :3

Allusions within this MV isn’t the only factor to this video’s success. Another great aspect of this MV is the acting. The over exaggeration of the characters fits perfectly with the old-cartoon style of the music video. From the over obsessive aegyo (acting so cute that it’s almost sickening) to GD’s dramatic flail after he is interrupted, everything is timed perfectly to make you continue laughing.

My personal favorite part of the MV

Now for the song itself. At first I thought the song was just about a guy trying to land a date, but after some analysis of the english translations, I realized that this song is just downright dirty. G Dragon’s use of wordplay to sublimely hint while not saying what he means directly is tricky. You sly fox GD,  know what you are up to. TOP’s second verse where he is trying to convince the girl that he is staying with her in order to “protect” her is just hilarious and very realistic unlike many other love songs out there. Realistic. Yeah that’s probably what I like most about this song. It’s realistic, not filled with overbearing hardships or unparalleled adoration for a person. It’s just two guys who want to play some scrabble in the dark, interestingly a complete contrast to the overexageration in he video.

In conclusion, I really recommend you watch this MV. It’s commical, well done, the song is catchy, and you can really see all the hard work GD&TOP had put into it.
